It all started with an invitation to a Sicilian wedding. And what better way to turn that into an adventure than by exploring all of Sicily at once?

It all started with an invitation to a Sicilian wedding. And what better way to turn that into an adventure than by exploring all of Sicily at once?

Italy has so much to offer that we haven’t even begun to write it all down. From Sardinia to Rome, Pompeii, Naples, Tuscany, and the Amalfi Coast – we’ve already had countless adventures, but many of the stories are still waiting to be shared.

For now, we’re excited to let you know that our co-writers Denise and Sacha recently explored Sicily. Their adventures are ready and waiting to be told – and soon they’ll take you along to ancient temples, lively towns, and breathtaking landscapes.

It all started with an invitation to a Sicilian wedding. And honestly, what better excuse to plan a trip than by turning it into a full Sicily adventure? After all, if you’re already there, you might as well explore everything this stunning island has to offer.

Trapani & Segesta – Ancient Temples and Hidden Ghost Towns

We flew from Düsseldorf Weeze to Trapani – just a short 2.5-hour flight – and Buongiorno Sicilia!

Our first stop was the Doric Temple of Segesta, one of the most impressive Greek temples in Sicily. Dating back to the 5th century BC, it sits proudly on a hill with sweeping views. Nearby, you’ll also find the Segesta amphitheater – a must-visit for its breathtaking panorama over the mountains. Insider tip: entry is free on the first Sunday of the month!

From there, we ventured to Poggioreale, a fascinating ghost town destroyed by an earthquake in 1968. Walking through abandoned houses and crumbling streets felt like stepping back in time – a true hidden gem for fans of urbex and off-the-beaten-path Sicily.

Palermo – Culture, Food, and Catacombs

No Sicily itinerary is complete without a day in Palermo, the island’s vibrant capital. From the majestic Palermo Cathedral to the lush botanical gardens, there’s plenty to see. Foodies will love the bustling markets, full of authentic Sicilian street food.

One unforgettable stop was the Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo. This eerie site is home to thousands of skeletons and mummies, once considered a status symbol. Walking past centuries-old remains arranged in categories was haunting, yet incredibly memorable.

Castellammare del Golfo – Coastal Charm

Castellammare del Golfo was one of our favorite seaside towns in Sicily – a short but magical stop recommended by the bridal couple. The lively square by the water hosts a small evening market, adding charm to the already cozy atmosphere. And of course, we indulged in authentic Italian pizza right by the sea. With shops, the beach, and restaurants all within walking distance, this is the perfect town to slow down and soak up Sicilian life.

Taormina & Isola Bella – The Pearl of Sicily

High on a hilltop, Taormina is a picturesque town famous for its views, lively piazzas, and ancient ruins. Parking here means handing over your car keys to an attendant – completely normal!

Just a short walk away lies Isola Bella, one of the most beautiful beaches in Sicily. This tiny island is connected to the mainland by a narrow pebble beach, making it the perfect spot for a refreshing swim in crystal-clear waters.

Mount Etna – Hiking Europe’s Most Active Volcano

No trip to Sicily would be complete without climbing Mount Etna, Europe’s highest active volcano. We booked our cable car tickets in advance, skipping the long lines, and within 15 minutes we were standing on top of the world, overlooking ancient lava fields.

We chose to hike the Red Crater – an adventure that started easily but soon became a real challenge. The climb was tough, but the views from the top were unforgettable: colorful volcanic rock, dramatic craters, and an epic panorama that made every step worth it.

Alcantara Gorge – A Natural Wonder

For nature lovers, the Alcantara Gorge (Parco Fluviale dell’Alcantara) is a must-visit. Known for its dramatic rock formations and icy river, it’s a paradise for hiking, canyoning, and even body rafting. We paid €10 to explore the riverbed – wading through the freezing water between towering cliffs was one of the most unique experiences of our trip.

Siracusa – Coastal Beauty & Cave Adventures

Siracusa (Syracuse) quickly became one of our favorite places in Sicily. Compact and walkable, this charming town is perfect for hot summer days. You’ll find elegant squares, artistic little streets, cozy restaurants, and creative shops all within easy reach.

We also took a boat tour of the sea caves, costing just €20 for an hour. The highlight? Jumping straight off the boat into the clear blue sea. Don’t forget your swimwear!

Sicily, Grazie!

From ancient temples and vibrant cities to volcano hikes and hidden beaches, our Sicily road trip was packed with unforgettable adventures. We traveled by rental car and booked our accommodation just one or two days in advance, leaving plenty of room for spontaneity – because in Sicily, there’s always something amazing waiting to be discovered.

If you’re planning your own trip, we can only say: go for it! Sicily has it all – culture, history, food, and nature.
